How the Democrats Almost Blew It

advertisement

McCain's selection of Governor Palin was a calculated move to deflect attention from the Democratic convention and Senator Obama's soaring acceptance speech. The Democrats, as did many others, reacted with astonishment to McCain's preposterous selection of a vice president. That reaction was what the McCain campaign and other Republicans were counting on. Because the Republican comeback, which was well-prepared and well rehearsed, was that Governor Palin has more experience and credentials to be president than Senator Obama. As Democrats ranted and raved about this ludicrous statement, the Republicans repeated their mantra about Governor Palin's executive experience and leadership qualities.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Like most people I was flabbergasted when I heard of Senator McCain's choice of Governor Palin as his vice presidential running mate. Later, I had the misfortune of watching the Larry King show and seeing a circus of the finest proportions. Ostensibly, James Carville and Nancy Pfotenhauer were being interviewed by Larry King as well as debating each other. Larry King asked Nancy on three occasions if Governor Palin was the best person in the Republican Party to be nominated for vice president. On all three occasions she chose not to answer the question and went into a prepared statement Governor Palin's qualifications and how she was better qualified than Senator Obama. James Carville spent most of the time being too stunned to reply to Nancy who mopped the floor with him verbally. She had a smile plastered on her face and kept repeating her mantra. At the time I wanted to throw something out her. It was only later that I realized that I was supposed to get angry at her. While she gets paid to do what she does, I would never want to have a job where I was paid to tell a lie.
